Owen Kim

2021 Golf Ontario U17 Champion

Member of Team Ontario and now Team Canada

Competitor Girls Program

"I met and starting working with David Banks at 16 years of age. Under his supervision, coaching, mentoring and hard work I went from shooting high 80's to competitively breaking par in just 4 years. I received a golf scholarship, got my Masters and I now try to pass on as much of what I learned from David to my women's team, the University of Richmond Spiders. I can honestly say I wouldn't be where I am now without him. He helped me and he can certainly help you."

    JUNIOR COMPETITOR PROGRAMS

Finding and choosing a coach for your junior golfer.

When it comes to junior golf instruction the relationship between the coach and the student (junior golfer) must be a "two-way" relationship. It requires respect, belief, confidence and trust from all parties involved. This certainly includes the parents in the case of a junior golfer, after all, it's your child, your prize possession.

    Are all coaches created equal?

Again, it's your child, do a little investigating, do some research, you do when it comes to less important things like buying a car or picking out a new phone. Here are some things, some questions you should consider?

What are the golfing goals of my child? This could range from "wanting to improve their skills to elevate their enjoyment of a game for their lifetime", to "developing their game to play and compete at the highest level they can achieve".

What is the coach's track record, their history, their success pertaining to my

    child's golfing goals?

What is the coach's background? Where have they coached, who have they coached, what programs are available? Are these in line with my child's goals?

How long has he/she been coaching? What are their credentials and/or certifications?

Should I seek a female coach for my daughter or a coach that has a proven track record and success coaching girls?

Is the coach passionate about helping my child achieve their golfing goals?

Personally, I have worked with many juniors at all levels and success aspirations. Some have achieved their desires and some have exceeded their expectations. A couple may not have arrived quite where they had hoped but I know through discussions with them that they enjoyed the journey and they took with them the belief and confidence that they tried their best and that's all any of us can aspire to do.

Most importantly, your child's success is my goal, my passion. Seeing them enjoy and succeed fuels my fire.
